Although I have been shopping in several of the malls in India now, I have been wondering where the locals buy their clothes because I know they don't pay the touristy prices I have been paying. Today I found my answer at Saravana Store! A cross between a WalMart Supercenter and Ross, Saravana Store was an exciting place to be! I went with Randy T. and Kevin who are always good sports; if I had to go shopping with two guys, these were the ones to do it with!
The store has seven stories of shopping paradise- you start with ladies casual saris, then on the dress saris and salwars, children's clothes, menswear, food, electronics and household goods and then shoes and accessories. It took us several hours to make it through the store and we skipped three of the floors!
I ended up buying two beautiful saris I can wear at weddings, two salwar sets, two pairs of shoes and a men's kurta- all for less than $100 US!
Almost everyone in the store is local, so they treat foreigners extra special. We were given a personal shopping guide upon entering who helped us navigate through the floors and different sections. He also carried all of our merchandise from floor to floor, which is a luxury because locals have to wait in line and pay on each floor before going to the next. An interesting things is that the store always takes a photo of the shopping guide with the foreigners on the way out of the store. It was cute, so I got a picture on my camera too.
I am sure I'll be going back to Saravana Store soon!
